CARBON COPY CLONER VS SUPER DUPER SOFTWARE
CCC is a truly outstanding piece of crafted software with top-notch support (I love the integrated help and support features) offered by a reliable and professionally-run company. CCC Help explains how Catalina has separate APFS Volume Groups with the System being read only to make it less vulnerable to hacker attacks I'd like to take this opportunity to say I've been extremely happy with Carbon Copy Cloner and Bombich Software over the four years I've been a customer.

If you haven't used CCC in a couple of years, you need version 5 for Catalina support As I back up to Time Capsule and, every so often, to Time Machine with an external hard disk drive I don't need to back up anything except the OS to Carbon Copy Cloner.

Choose Show all devices from Disk Utility's View menu Carbon Copy Cloner ($40) has supported making full clones that boot with Catalina since August 2019. Disk Utility's interface for performing this simple task is surprisingly unintuitive, so here is a summary of the process with some emphasis on the steps where people often go awry: Open Disk Utility. Note that while this version of CCC may work on OSes newer than Big Sur, we recommend that Big Sur+ users upgrade to CCC 6. Now that Apple has made the OS release schedule so consistent, we find this time of year to be a lot less stressful by simply being ready for it, on time. We posted our Catalina-certified build of CCC way back in August, so the last few weeks have been eerily calm. prices & deals subject to change Cloning Catalina with Carbon Copy Cloner.

No I don’t travel foreign, and that is an entirely new subject. I’m sure they can be good if done right, but don’t expect them to offer an insurance payout if you data disappears, so … local distributed backup clones are still needed. I don’t use online backups now, but may do so in the future. Third, a mobile SSD makes sure I can keep a clone of my boot partition separate from my laptop when on the move. This is my insurance against accidental deletion, bad changes or corruption (which happens maybe once a year.).
CARBON COPY CLONER VS SUPER DUPER MAC
The 2nd secret for my use is just that, a 2nd partition on my Mac that is a clone updated yesterday w/CCC that only takes typically 3-5 minutes. That means you are not likely to have drive or sector failure on a drive that won’t be used much. The first secret to long lived cloned data is simple: A new (cheap now) 1-2 TB hard drive partitioned into chunks a bit bigger than you drive to be backed up. I’ve never had a CarbonnCop圜loner failure to copy & be able to copy a needed file or clone back a disk … ever. Sorry, but my Mac use since the 512k Mac has shown lots of failures of TM backups (once TM was released) to the point I will never use it again.ĭitto for Retrospect & it’s proprietary format.
